The Valkyrie programme may be inspired by many existing wilderness therapy programmes, but we combine the important outdoor elements of these with the evidence-based success of peer support that makes us a unique service.
We utilise a model in which participants take part in outdoor activities to create a safe environment and develop bonds between participants to provide the security to share personal issues.
Informal peer support sessions around our campfire provide an environment in which participants can share their thoughts and feelings without judgement, pressure or individual agendas.
Individuals referred or signposted to Valkyrie are contacted by telephone for an informal chat, and subject to suitability, will be invited to join the next available group.
Our next wellbeing groups will comprise of 6 sessions, approximately once per month on a weekday evening 6.30-8pm. Participants will learn to throw knives and axes before sitting down to an informal group support session centred around a relevant topic such as depression or anxiety.
One of our recovery participants uses her new skills to light the campfire.
It is widely accepted that there is a therapeutic benefit to spending time in the outdoors. Our rural location offers a tranquil setting, home to squirrels, and a variety of birds which participants may spot whilst attending our programmes.
Our Wilderness Wellbeing programme has been designed to fit with the concept of 'green' social prescribing, offering people the opportunity to gain the benefits of the outdoors whilst helping them to socialise and share experiences and problems.
When groups meet it provides an opportunity to discuss problems we may have been experiencing and get support and advice from other group members.
Groups will have the opportunity to explore topics such as panic attacks, overcoming negative thinking and using thought diaries.
Sustainability is paramount to our projects as attendees may require future guidance and support, to enable them to maintain their new positive path in life. Valkyrie aims to give this follow-up support to everyone who needs it.
Acceptance Criteria and Requirements
Wilderness Wellbeing is open to people experiencing difficulties with emotional wellbeing, such as mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety, isolation or loneliness. If you think you could benefit from attending our workshops, please contact us to discuss your needs with a member of our team.
Applications from people in recovery will only be accepted from those who have been free from substance use for a minimum of a month, and will ideally already be actively engaging with an established recovery provider such as AA or NA.
We cannot accept anyone who is still undergoing medical treatment, such as methadone prescribing, for their addiction.
No alcohol or drug use will be tolerated at any of our activities, nor will anyone be allowed to participate if they are believed to be under the influence of substances. All participants will be required to undertake random testing for drugs/alcohol.
We reserve the right to ask anyone to leave the programme at any time in line with this requirement.
Although participants are not required to attend every meeting/session, we do encourage regular attendance in order to develop and maintain bonds within the group.
If appropriate, we signpost and support participants to access external services such as health counselling, therapy or training providers .
